Literature Text

You sprinted through the deserted streets, the ominous clouds promising rain matching your dark, unpredictable mood. Your sneakers pounded the pavement, the sound and the sensation overpowering any other thoughts that could cloud your mind. You felt like nothing could catch you, but as the saying goes, you can’t run away from your problems.

You paused in the middle of the road, panting heavily, hands on your knees. The first few drops of rain tainted the even tone of the asphalt, and slowly the memories came back to you, each one adding new weight to your soul.

Practically tearing into your jean pocket, you unwound your iPod and jammed the earbuds in, randomly selecting a song without really looking at the title. You just wanted to forget, to get away, anything. But the first hauntingly beautiful notes did anything but that. The rain fell faster.

She never slows down.

You never did. With everything that had happened, slowing down simply wasn’t an option anymore.

She doesn't know why but she knows that when she's all alone, feels like it’s all coming down.

It had become harder and harder for you to be alone after…after the break up. Everything reminded you of him. All of the memories, both happy and sad, sweet but yet bitter, would come flooding back and before you knew it, you would be on the floor in a mess of tears.

She won't turn around.
The shadows are long and she fears if she cries that first tear, the tears will not stop raining down.

You felt the familiar burning sensation building behind your eyes, and you fought it for as long as you could, but as the rain pasted your hair to your head and plastered your clothes to your body, you decided that it would be okay to cry.

Just this one time.

So stand in the rain,
Stand your ground,
Stand up when it’s all crashing down
You’ll stand through the pain,
You won’t drown
And one day what’s lost can be found.
You stand in the rain.

Tears mingled with the rain as they fell from your eyes, broken-hearted sobbing was muffled by the comforting sound of the monsoon drenching everything. You simply stood there and cried, arms dangling by your side, face upturned, letting the water wash over you.

She won’t make a sound.

You never told anyone about the extent of your emotions after the break up, not wanting to trouble anyone with the fact that you could barely go through a day without completely breaking down.

Alone in this fight with herself and the fears whispering, if she stands, she’ll fall down.

You were constantly at war with yourself, one side of your brain declaring that you should be happier with no one to tie you down anymore, while the other side hissed poisonous words such as ‘It’s your fault he left/your fault you’re alone/who could ever love you?’ and it was slowly breaking you down.

She wants to be found.

You wanted him back. You wanted his voice and his presence with his stupid little smile that made your knees weak and his endearing monstrosities he called eyebrows. Just thinking about it made you cry harder.

The only way out is through everything she’s running from, wants to give up and lie down.

You fell to your knees, not even noticing the sting as the gravel embedded itself in your knees, the weight of the emotions nearly crushing you.

Before the chorus could replay itself, bright headlights slashed through the darkness and the rain, and wheels squealed as the driver slammed on the breaks in an effort to not hit you. You raised your arm to block painful lights from reaching your sensitive eyes, but did nothing to remove yourself from the pathway of the vehicle. The car screeched to a stop a few feet away from you, and the driver burst from the car without hesitation.

“_______?! What the bloody hell is wrong with you?!” the driver roared, running to your side, the headlights allowing you to identify him as none other than your ex-boyfriend, Arthur Kirkland, his gorgeous green eyes wide and frantic with worry. He tore the earbuds from your ears so you can hear what he had to say. “First you ignore everyone, then you just up and disappear! Do you know how bloody worried I was?” By now he was gripping your shoulders, forcing you to look at him.

“You…were worried?” you mumbled and he looked at you like you had just started to speak in Swedish.

“Of course I was worried! ______, I’m so sorry about the break up, it was the worst decision I have ever made and I’ve been regretting it since I left. God, ______, I’ve been a mess without you…” Arthur sighed and ran an agitated hand through his sopping wet hair.

“I missed you too…” was all you could get out before wrapped your arms around him and rested your head on his shoulder. Arthur gratefully returned the hug, and for a few minutes, you felt like nothing could hurt you.

“Come on love, let’s get you home. You’re completely soaked.” Arthur said, and you nodded as a sudden wave of fatigue settled in your mind. Arthur helped you stand and guided you to the passenger side of the car before getting into the driver’s side and driving away.

So stand in the rain,
Stand your ground,
Stand up when it’s all crashing down
You’ll stand through the pain,
You won’t drown
And one day what’s lost can be found.
You stand in the rain.
Well...this is a piece of crap. I was bored and I felt like I owed you guys something after being away for so long.
